How did you get into bowls?
Having heard about it in my primary schools newsletter, a nearby club was running a youth open day. I was one of two people who turned up, the other person gave up within 15 minutes, I managed to last a decade and don’t plan on stopping any time soon
Proudest achievement in bowls.
My proudest achievement in bowls is winning my former clubs Championship and Handicap tournaments, along with getting to the semis in all the other tournaments. Although not a big achievement in comparison to some of my fellow contributors, it showed me that I was improving and had the ability to do well at a time that I just couldn’t believe in myself
One thing that you would like to achieve in bowls.
Although I would like to continue my bowls journey into becoming a better player and reach as high as I possibly can in competitions, my main goal is to show others how brilliant and exciting the sport can be and draw a wider audience into bowls, encouraging youths to take up the sport, forming new organisations and tournaments both on county and country level, and hopefully one day changing the prejudice that bowls is only for old people.
One thing that you enjoy most about bowls.
As someone who plays other highly competitive sports, I greatly enjoy the friendly aspect to the game. There are very few experiences that compare to having a nice friendly match in the warm weather and a cold drink followed by a barbecue. With that being said however, I still love to get excited about a game.
One bit of advice that you would give to a new bowler.
Just enjoy it. Many new players get put off when they struggle to consistently get close to the jack. Take it from someone who is still struggling to consistently get it close to the jack: that’s the fun of the game. The improvement will come as time goes on, but if you stop playing, it won’t.
